MILAN (AP) — Norway’s Eirik Brandsal took advantage of a mistake by Russia’s Alexey Petukhov to win a cross-country World Cup freestyle sprint at Parco Sempione on Saturday.

Brandsal beat Josef Wenzl of Germany by 0.2 seconds in the final. Teodor Peterson of Sweden was 0.3 seconds back in third. Petukhov finished fifth after falling on the home straightaway of the 1.4-kilometer course.

In the women’s event, Sweden’s Ida Ingemarsdotter claimed her first individual World Cup victory, beating Sprint Cup leader Kikkan Randall of the United States by 0.2 seconds.

Norway’s Maiken Caspersen Falla was third, 1.3 seconds behind Ingemarsdotter.
