Hot-shooting LIU defeats Monmouth (NJ) 106-86

NEW YORK (AP) — Julian Boyd scored 28 points and Long Island University shot 72.8 percent in the second half to defeat Monmouth (N.J.) 106-86 on Saturday for the Blackbirds’ seventh straight win.

LIU (12-6, 6-0 Northeast Conference) posted its highest point total of the season, making 24 of 33 field goals in the second half to break open a six-point game at halftime.

The Blackbirds shot 63.9 percent from the field overall (39 of 61) and made 25 of 30 free throws.

LIU led 41-22 with 3:57 left in the first half, then the Hawks (3-16, 1-5) used a 15-2 run to close to 43-37.

After Monmouth cut the deficit to four to open the second half, LIU launched a 12-3 run to pull away.

Jamal Olasewere added 19 points for the Blackbirds and C.J. Garner, Michael Culpo and Kenny Onyechi had 14 apiece.

Mike Myers Keitt’s 27 points led the Hawks.
