Winthrop defeats Liberty 64-61 in overtime

Lynchburg, Va. (AP) — Andre Jones hit two free throws with 3 seconds remaining in overtime to help Winthrop defeat Liberty 64-61on Saturday night.

Jones, who scored 14 points, also hit a layup with 5 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score 54-54 and send it into overtime.

Reggie Middleton scored 16 points, while James Bourne and George Valentine each added 10 for the Eagles (6-11, 3-3 Big South Conference). Valentine also had 10 rebounds.

The Eagles never trailed in the extra period. Winthrop led 62-58 after a dunk by Valentine with 31 seconds remaining, then Liberty cut the deficit to 62-61 with 19 seconds to go on a 3-pointer by Jesse Sanders. Jones’ free throws iced it 16 seconds later.

The Eagles shot 42.9 percent (25 of 59) from the field.

John Caleb Sanders scored 18 points, and Jesse Sanders added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Flames (6-13, 1-7).
