Letter: Study activity of deep-channel ports

Not much detail was in the Jan. 12 story “Cantwell touts bill at port.” Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and many others should check into activity at the Port of Lazaro Cardenas, on Mexico’s west coast, and on that port’s direct rail link to Kansas City, Mo. The Mexican port is already being managed by Hong Kong-based Hutchison Port Holdings Ltd., the world’s largest developer and operator of deep-water ports.

The depth of the channel to Lazaro Cardenas is being increased to 59 feet; the Columbia River channel to Portland/Vancouver is now 43 feet deep, after a 20-year project.

The Port of Vancouver seems to have made sound decisions in avoiding container operations.
