A's reach agreement with McCarthy, Devine

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The Oakland Athletics have agreed to one-year contracts with right-handers Brandon McCarthy and Joey Devine, avoiding arbitration.

They were the final two arbitration-eligible players on Oakland's roster.

McCarthy became a reliable starter after earning the fifth spot in the rotation. He went 9-9 with a 3.32 ERA in 25 starts. He posted career highs in wins, starts, complete games (five), innings pitched (170 2-3) and strikeouts (123). His 123 strikeouts to 25 walks set an A's record for strikeout-to-walk ratio at 4.92.

Devine returned after missing the 2009 and '10 seasons recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery. Called up from Triple-A Sacramento on May 20, he went 1-1 with a 3.52 ERA in 26 relief appearances before going back to the minors.

Oakland announced the deals on Tuesday.
