Ex-MLB pitching coach Peterson hired by Orioles

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Baltimore Orioles have hired former major league pitching coach Rick Peterson to be their director of pitching development.

The one-year deal was announced on the team website. Peterson is to oversee the team's minor league pitchers, a job formerly held by Alan Dunn.

Peterson was named pitching coach of the Oakland Athletics in 1998. He joined the New York Mets in 2003 and the Milwaukee Brewers in October 2009. He was fired by the Brewers after the 2010 season when the team had a managerial change.

Peterson also was Toronto's minor league pitching coordinator in 1996.

The 57-year-old Peterson has a reputation for implementing techniques designed to reduce the risk of injuries in pitchers.

The deal was finalized after Peterson interviewed several times for the job.
