Hamilton, Oakland, Mich., top Southern Utah 72-63

CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) — Reggie Hamilton scored 21 points to lead Oakland, Mich., to a 72-63 victory over Southern Utah on Thursday night.

Laval Lucas-Perry added 14 points and Corey Petros 13 for the Golden Grizzlies (11-10, 5-4 Summit League), who won their third in a row and beat Southern Utah for the seventh consecutive time.

Ramell Taylor scored 17 points and Damon Heuir 11 for the Thunderbirds (9-10, 4-5).

The big difference came at the foul line. Southern Utah made all 14 attempts, but Oakland went 22 of 35 as the Thunderbirds were called for 26 fouls to the Grizzlies’ 14.

Lucas-Perry converted a three-point play to give Oakland its largest lead, 33-21, with 1:20 before halftime. Southern Utah scored the final five points of the half and trailed 33-26 at the break.

The Thunderbirds whittled the deficit to 45-42 on Ray Jones Jr.’s layup with 10:47 to go but got no closer.
