LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Charlie Weis completed his first coaching staff at Kansas on Thursday by hiring Wisconsin assistant DeMontie Cross to coach the linebackers.

Cross spent last season coaching the Badgers’ special teams and safeties. Before that, the former Missouri safety coached at Sam Houston State, Iowa State and for five seasons with the Buffalo Bills, primarily handling the linebackers.

Weis wanted the defensive staff in place by the weekend, when several defensive recruits will be on campus.

Dave Campo will coordinate the defense. Cross will work closely with defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt and defensive backs coach Clint Bowen.

Weis will run the offense. Ron Powlus will coach quarterbacks, Reggie Mitchell running backs, Rob Ianello wide receivers, Tim Grunhard the offensive line and Jeff Blasko the tight ends.
