WA highway reopens, freeing skiers at resort

CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN, Wash. (AP) — The Washington state Transportation Department says State Highway 410 to Crystal Mountain has reopened.

That’s good news for about 200 skiers, workers and others who had been marooned at the Crystal Mountain ski area since the highway suddenly closed Wednesday night.

Crystal Mountain spokeswoman Tiana Enger says the resort discounted hotel rooms for the group and there were plenty of rooms left.

The Seattle Times reported Friday that most skiers had left the area long before trees blocked the road and cut off electricity.

Enger says Crystal has a generator for power, including power to the ski lifts. However, on Thursday, falling trees temporarily wiped out electricity to the cellular tower, and cell service and email went down until about 5 p.m. Thursday.
