Commission to review Spokane police use of force



SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A five-member commission reviewing how Spokane police use force will include recently retired state Supreme Court Justice Gerry (Gary) Alexander.

The panel will be headed by former Gonzaga Law School Dean Earl Martin and also includes former U.S. Attorney for Eastern Washington Bill Hyslop.

The city decided to create the Use of Force Commission last year to review the beating death of a mentally ill man in 2006, which led to the conviction of a police officer found guilty of using excessive force and lying to investigators.

The Spokesman-Review reports ( ) the city council is expected to confirm the members of the commission next week.

The commission also will review police training, procedures and civilian oversight.
