ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) — Construction has reached a peak at Aberdeen on the pontoons that will support the new Highway 520 floating bridge on Lake Washington at Seattle.

About 350 workers are now working day and night, building more than 30 pontoons. The largest are longer than a football field.

The Daily World reports (http://is.gd/BLLNT0) about half the workers on the $378 million pontoon project are from the Grays Harbor area, including some new ironworker apprentices.

The first pontoons will be floated into the Chehalis River in April. They’ll eventually be towed to Seattle to build the new six-lane bridge.

The $4.6 billion project will replace the existing Highway 520 bridge. The 48-year-old bridge is the longest floating bridge in the world at over a mile.
