High water undermines RR track along Puget Sound

SEATTLE (AP) — Wind-driven waves undermined the Puget Sound seawall and washed away rocks supporting one set of the dual Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks north of Seattle.

Spokesman Gus Melonas (mel-OWN’-us) says the damage Thursday did not reach the other set of tracks and Amtrak, Sound and freight trains are still rolling on the BNSF main line.

Melonas says repair crews brought in more than 30 rail cars with boulders to replace the seawall riprap and smaller rocks for the track ballast.

The damaged set of tracks could reopen as soon as Friday afternoon but the work will continue for several days.
