Samford edges Georgia Southern 57-55

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Drew Windler scored 18 points and Samford held on for a 57-55 victory over Georgia Southern on Thursday night.

Windler got 15 of his points in the second half for the Bulldogs (6-13, 3-5 Southern Conference), including a layup that gave them a 55-51 lead with 3:35 remaining.

Trailing by a point, 56-55, the Eagles (8-12, 6-4) got the ball after a missed layup by Windler with 23 seconds left, but Jelani Hewitt was off the mark on a 3-point try with 6 seconds to go. After a Jeffrey Merritt free throw for Samford, Ben Drayton’s jumper at the buzzer missed for Georgia Southern.

Will Cook had nine points and five assists for Samford, and Merritt had eight points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Hewitt led the Eagles with 23 points. Eric Ferguson added 14.

The teams split their season series, with Georgia Southern a 58-53 winner on Jan. 12.
