Letter: Same-sex marriage is no threat

Let me offer some clarification to E. Bruce Preece’s June 27 letter, “Strike down same-sex marriage law.” The quote is “If you call a tail a leg, how many legs has a dog? Five? No, calling a tail a leg don’t make it a leg.” Preece may recall another famous quote, “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” Sage advice, sadly not followed nearly often enough.

I offer a quote by Abraham Lincoln, and a very prescient one in this case, “The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew.”

Times continue to change and our case is indeed new. I can only hope that the voters choose not to “strike a blow” but instead rise to their full capacity of thinking and acting anew. Same-sex marriage is a threat to no one. It compromises no sanctity and does not have a destabilizing effect on children. It does offer inclusion, acceptance, and equality. Voters of Washington have the opportunity to dispatch some old inadequate dogmas and stand behind beliefs that are less judgmental and more inclusive.
