Letter: Control level of celebration

Vancouver needs to get out of the Dark Ages and stop the madness that is being characterized as a celebration of Independence Day. The firecrackers and bombs are frightening, disruptive and even traumatic to some veterans of wars and to animals. They also scare birds and squirrels sleeping in the trees. Many jurisdictions have restrictions for both safety and comfort.

In my neighborhood, the noise tapered about midnight, but there were still loud booms until 3 a.m. The force that is required to produce these booms cannot possibly be safe. When are people going to demand that this stop?

It appears that some nonprofit groups benefit from the sale of fireworks, and that has become the argument against more restrictions. But there are other ways to raise money. This should not be used as a way to perpetuate the uncontrolled noise and danger to the community.

We have our fireworks display at Fort Vancouver for families to enjoy in a controlled setting, and the residents and city government must find a way to support this event, so it can continue as a safe and enjoyable way for everyone to celebrate July 4.
