Letter: Trashed city shocks former resident

As a former Vancouver resident, I was shocked during a visit over Fourth of July to witness the abundance of weeds and trash taking over the city. Whether it was freeways, highways or city streets, the condition looks absolutely abysmal. Is Vancouver vying for a Weed City U.S.A. designation in addition to Tree City U.S.A. award it has had for 23 years? Or are tall weeds now considered part of that award? Surely the good residents of Vancouver are working to remedy this situation. I certainly hope the present state of affairs hasn't fallen victim as a political/budget football.
