LOS ANGELES (AP) — When Josesito Lopez and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez stand toe-to-toe and stare each other down, the supposedly undersized Lopez is the one looking down at his opponent.
Maybe their Sept. 15 bout isn’t such a size mismatch after all. Maybe Lopez really has another shot at an incredible upset.
In front of several hundred eager fans, Lopez and Alvarez formally announced the fight Tuesday at a park on historic Olvera Street. They’re headlining a strong card at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.
Their show will go head-to-head with another card just down Tropicana Avenue, topped by middleweights Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez.
Lopez jumped to prominence last month when he stopped Victor Ortiz in a shocking welterweight upset just four weeks after taking the fight.
