Letter: Church justified to take a stand

The Columbian
Published: July 17, 2012, 5:00pm

Wow! I was floored when reading Larry Little’s commentary (or rather rant) against the Catholic Church in his July 12 letter, “Church should not dictate law.” He really believes that people are guaranteed a freedom from religion? The Catholic Church has every right to not support birth control, abortion, and the redefining of marriage because of the church’s beliefs. It is the government that has no right to prohibit free exercise of religious beliefs. “Free exercise” is the key phrase. Legislation that takes away that freedom by forcing Catholic institutions to provide insurance plans that pay for abortion and birth control measures is unconstitutional.
