1867-style 'base ball' comes to fort Saturday
Thursday, July 19, 2012
A free exhibition of the national pastime, 1867-style, will be presented at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.
The game will be played on the Vancouver Barracks Parade Ground, near the bandstand just south of Officers Row.
Players will be wearing period uniforms, which means no baseball gloves. The umpire can fine spectators for ungentlemanly or unladylike behavior.
The event also will feature a historic weapons demonstration to start the game at 6 p.m.; re-enactors playing 1867 croquet (members of the public can participate); and the Whiskey Flats Brass Band playing 1867 music between innings
Spectators can bring lawn chairs or blankets and picnic suppers, but cooking and barbecues are prohibited.
