AKRON, Ohio (AP) — An international field of more than 500 boys and girls are off and rolling at the All-American Soap Box Derby.

Drivers enjoyed sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s Saturday. That was a welcome change from the high heat and humidity earlier in the week during trial runs on Derby Downs hill.

Awaiting his first run was 12-year-old Brenner Furlong of Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. On Tuesday, he crashed into the guardrail during trials, but seemed more worried about damage to his car than his scrapes and bruises.

Furlong patched up the car and joined the ceremonial parade for the start of the 75th edition of the race. He headed to the top of the hill for the first of what he hoped would be several runs in the Super Stock division.
