On the sidelines: Look up in the sky

As three parachuters touched down on the fresh soil at Washougal Motocross Park Saturday afternoon, it signaled the beginning of big air under blue skies for the world’s fastest motorcycle riders.

Mike Alessi stunned Ryan Dungey with a big win in the first moto of the 450 class. Dungey was gaining on Alessi with each lap, until a slip up on his bike turned him into a tailspin. Dungey recovered and finished strong, but he didn’t have enough track to catch Alessi.

In the final 450 moto, Dungey snagged the holeshot out of the gate and soared to his fifth straight overall victory at Washougal. He is still the King of Horsepower Hill.

Justin Barcia made a big move by overtaking Marvin Musquin and Eli Tomac to win the first moto of the 250 class. Blake Baggett bounced back from a sixth-place finish in the first moto to win the second moto at 250, but Barcia took second in the second moto to maintain his handle on the overall lead.

Women’s riders Ashley Fiolek and Tarah Gieger closed the gap on overall leader Jessica Patterson. Fiolek swept both motos for first place overall, and Gieger grabbed third in the first moto, second in the second moto and second overall. Patterson raced with a broken left hand, but still finished fourth overall.
