Whitbread joins Leicester City on free transfer

LEICESTER, England (AP) -- American defender Zak Whitbread has signed for English second-tier club Leicester on a two-year contract from Norwich.

Whitbread, of Houston, joined Leicester on Tuesday. He made 21 appearances for Norwich in the Premier League last season.

Leicester coach Nigel Pearson says "Zak is a player of great quality that will add a huge amount of experience to the squad. I'm delighted to have him here."

Whitbread, 28, graduated from the Liverpool youth academy before moving permanently to Millwall in 2006 following a loan at the London club.

He was part of the United States under-20 squad at the World Youth Championship in 2003.
