Voters will get their fourth say in 16 years on establishing charter schools in Washington.

Secretary of State Sam Reed has certified Initiative 1240 for the November ballot, his office announced Wednesday.

Supporters of the measure submitted more than 357,000 signatures, which they collected in 21 days.

Charter schools get their name from the charter that is granted by school officials to a group of parents, teachers or other community members to operate a school. Such schools get public money but are not administered by local school boards.

Sponsors of establishing charter schools in Washington brought in 357,252 signatures, far more than the 241,153 needed, according to state election officials. Of the random sample of 10,915, inspectors found 9,337 were valid.

Charter school measures were narrowly defeated in 2000 and lost by larger majorities in 1996 and 2004.
