Tibetan monks to create sand mandala in Battle Ground

Six Tibetan monks from India will use individual grains of sand to create a beautiful, intricate design at the Battle Ground Community Library, starting 10 a.m. Aug. 1.

Making a sand mandala takes three days, starting and ending with traditional singing and chanting. The monks will sweep the design away Aug. 3 at 4:30 p.m. and release the sand into the river at Lewisville Park. They believe this meditative art form blesses the surrounding environment.

The monks’ visit is part of a five-month tour of the West Coast. In December 2010, the Cascade Park Community Library hosted the ritual.
