COUPEVILLE, Wash. (AP) — Two cranes lifted a sunken fishing boat out of Penn Cove off Whidbey Island on Sunday.

The Deep Sea sank shortly after it caught fire May 12 and diesel leaks from its tanks have closed both commercial and recreational shellfish harvesting in the area.

The Seattle Times (http://is.gd/Q6k74J ) reports Washington’s Department of Fish & Wildlife lists Penn Cove as the third most popular shellfish beach in the Puget Sound.

A joint state and federal recovery effort managed to lift the 140-foot boat off the bottom of the cove midday on Sunday. It had been lying on its side in 25 feet of silt.

The state Department of Health says if all goes according to plan the area could be reopened to shellfish harvesting this week.
