CRESWELL, Ore. (AP) — Casey Martin and his cart are headed back to The Olympic Club for the U.S. Open.
Martin, who sued for the right to use a golf cart because of a degenerative disease in his right leg, holed a 5-foot par putt on the final hole at Emerald Valley Golf Club to be the medalist at a sectional qualifier and earn one of two spots to the U.S. Open.
Martin has not played the U.S. Open since 1998, when he forced the USGA to let him ride a cart because of his leg. He tied for 23rd at The Olympic Club, and then earned his PGA Tour card that year. Martin, 40, now is the golf coach at Oregon. The Ducks reached the semifinals of the NCAA Championship last weekend.
