DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have put catcher Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain.

Detroit purchased the contract of catcher Bryan Holaday from Triple-A Toledo and designated catcher Omir Santos for assignment. The Tigers also recalled right-hander Jose Ortega from Toledo.

Holaday is set to make his major league debut Wednesday night against Cleveland. He was a sixth-round pick in the 2010 draft and hit .248 in 36 games with Toledo this year.

Avila joins outfielders Austin Jackson (abdominal strain) and Andy Dirks (right Achilles’ tendinitis) and right-hander Doug Fister (left side strain) as key contributors on the DL for Detroit. Also, designated hitter Victor Martinez has been out all season with a knee injury.

Jackson is expected to begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Toledo.
