Shumway — The Shumway Neighborhood is a lot safer now, thanks to local Fire Corps volunteers and Boy Scout Troop 525. First, the scouts met with Assistant Fire Marshal John Gentry to assemble and date-stamp new smoke detectors with 10-year batteries. Next, on the morning of May 19, the Fire Corps picked up electric drills and buckets of the new alarms, and installed more than 140 new devices in 37 Shumway homes. The old alarms were sent to recycling. The whole operation was provided free of charge by the Vancouver Fire Department.
