NEW YORK (AP) — A person familiar with the selection tells The Associated Press that Fredric Horowitz has been hired to replace Shyam Das as the arbitrator for Major League Baseball and its players’ association.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because no announcement had been made.

The 63-year-old Horowitz has been involved in baseball salary arbitration, serving on three-member panels that decided cases for Dan Uggla, Hunter Pence, Ross Ohlendorf and Shawn Hill and against Mark Loretta, Wandy Rodriguez, Brian Fuentes and Sean Burnett. He also has been an NHL salary arbitrator.

Das, who had been baseball’s arbitrator since 1999, was fired last month by management following his decision to overturn Ryan Braun’s 50-game suspension for a positive drug test.
