NEW YORK (AP) — The Mets have agreed to terms with shortstop Gavin Cecchini, their first-round draft pick.
The 18-year-old high school senior from Lake Charles, La., was taken 12th overall by the Mets in the amateur draft on Monday night. He was given a $2.3 million signing bonus, $250,000 less than what is slotted for that pick under the new collective bargaining agreement.
Under the agreement, a team’s bonus slots for the first 10 rounds of the draft are totaled, and an organization exceeding the total faces a tax and the possibility of losing future picks.
Also, the Mets reinstated right-hander Chris Young from the paternity leave list and optioned right-hander Pedro Beato to Triple-A Buffalo before Friday night’s game at the Yankees. Infielder Josh Satin and pitcher Jack Egbert were sent outright to Buffalo.
