STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — For the first time in three summers, Penn State doesn’t have an offseason quarterback quandary.

Coach Bill O’Brien put any suspense to rest last week when he named Matt McGloin the starter.

McGloin joked Thursday that he can now relax. But he also understands he must work harder than ever to make sure he holds on to the job through his senior campaign in 2012.

There’s the matter of mastering the new offense installed this spring by O’Brien, the former coordinator of the New England Patriots’ potent offense. Star Tom Brady was his quarterback.

Now O’Brien’s quarterback is McGloin, who split time the previous two seasons with Rob Bolden. McGloin being named starter now will help with team leadership and gives him more time to focus on the playbook.
