BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have activated right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka from the 60-day disabled list Saturday to start against the Washington Nationals.
Matsuzaka is making his first major league start since having last season cut short after elbow reconstructive surgery last June 10.
To make room, the Red Sox designated outfielder Marlon Byrd for assignment.
Byrd appeared in 34 games for the Red Sox after being acquired from the Cubs on April 21, hitting .270 with one homer and seven RBIs.
Matsuzaka made eight minor league starts while working his way back from Tommy John surgery.
