GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Police in Guyana have arrested a man who allegedly fired gunshots into a crowd at a soccer game, seriously wounding three people.

A Sunday police statement says a suspect has been detained and is being questioned. Authorities say they expect the suspect will be charged with attempted murder.

Detectives believe the gunman was trying to kill Oriley Small, a former soccer player in the South American country. Small was shot three times and has been hospitalized in serious condition.

Two other people standing by Small were also hit and listed in serious condition at a hospital.

The shooting occurred Friday night at a local soccer competition.
