ST. LOUIS (AP) — World vault champion McKayla Maroney will not compete in the finals of the U.S. gymnastics championships Sunday afternoon after hitting her head on the floor during training.

The 16-year-old from Long Beach, Calif., is conscious, but showed signs of a concussion and was taken to a hospital for further tests. She has petitioned for a spot at the Olympic trials, June 28 to July 1 in San Jose, Calif.

Maroney was doing a tumbling run during pre-meet training when she fell hard, landing flat on her back. The thud could be heard throughout the arena, and she lay there for several minutes before walking off the podium with Dr. Larry Nassar. He examined her on the sidelines before the two left the competition floor.
