Blue Jays release Guerrero from minor league deal

TORONTO (AP) -- The Toronto Blue Jays have granted Vladimir Guerrero's request to be released from his minor-league contract.

The 37-year-old free agent hit .303 in eight games with the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s of the Pacific Coast League.

The Blue Jays signed Guerrero to a minor-league deal on May 10. He reported to extended spring training in Dunedin, Fla., and appeared in four games for Single-A Dunedin.

There was no immediate word on why Guerrero asked for his release.

Guerrero is a nine-time All-Star and the 2004 American League MVP award with the Anaheim Angels. He has a career batting average of .318 with 449 home runs and 1,496 RBIs.

In 2011, he batted .290 in 145 games for Baltimore.
