A man who died Sunday evening after falling 30 feet from Lower Falls Creek Trail in Skamania County has been identified as 65-year-old Thomas Bennett of West Linn, Ore., authorities said.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office released the man’s identity Monday morning.

Deputies said Bennett was hiking with his wife, Susan, when he stumbled on the trail and fell over a nearly vertical cliff, about 16 miles north of Carson in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

When rescuers arrived, they found Bennett submerged in 3 feet of water in Falls Creek, according to a Skamania County Sheriff’s Office news release. Another hiker came across Bennett’s wife on the trail and drove her to Carson.

The fall was the second fatality at Skamania County recreation spots in two days.
