Community notebook: Solstice run, walk set for Saturday night

Running enthusiasts in Southwest Washington will have another good reason to lace up their shoes on Saturday.

The Summer Solstice Run and Walk offers 3-mile and 6-mile loops and starts at 6 p.m. in downtown Vancouver. In addition to the races, a 5 p.m. costume contest and a post-race street dance are planned.

The event is a fundraiser for the Clark County Family YMCA’s youth programs and is staged by Northwest Personal Training. The race starts and ends in front of Northwest Personal Training, 1011 Broadway.

Cost is $55, $25 for ages 17 and younger. Advance online registration closes Wednesday.Anyone not up to run or walk can participate by volunteering or by attending the post-race beer garden and street dance. Soccer fair on Saturday

The Southwest Washington Soccer Fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Hudson’s Bay High School.

The free event is an opportunity to learn about youth soccer in the area and to register for fall soccer leagues. Each of the areas youth soccer clubs will be represented, and the event will also include a variety of vendors and free games, plus raffles for soccer prizes.To learn more, visit www.swysa.net.

More summer hoops camps

The start of summer vacation means many high school coaches will be holding camps and clinics.

One of the first local basketball camps is the Chieftain Hoop Camp, June 25-27 at Columbia River High School. This camp is for boys ages 7-14 and runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each of the three days. Cost is $75. Walk-in registration will be accepted on the morning of June 25.

• The Eagle Hoop Camp will take place July 16-19 at Hudson’s Bay High School. This basketball camp is for boys entering grades 4-9. It is run by the coaches and members of the Hudson’s Bay boys’ basketball program in conjunction with Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation. Daily sessions run 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $80.
