Talking Points: NBA Finals format needs changing
Thursday, June 21, 2012
The Heat can wrap up the NBA title Thursday night and if they do, the series will end with Miami having more home games than Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma City earned home-court advantage. But if the series ends tonight, who really did have home-court advantage?
It's time for the NBA to return to the 2-2-1-1-1 format.
Yes, it is rare for any team to sweep the three middle games of the series since the NBA went to this format in 1985.
That's not the point.
No top seed should ever play more games on the road than at home in any series.
It's that simple.
News flash! It is not illegal to interrupt Bob Costas.
As long as you have a ticket.
Some are calling him the Rooster Guy. Andrew James Dudley walked onto the 18th green at the U.S. Open during the awards ceremony Sunday night and starting making bird noises.
Costas was interviewing tournament winner Webb Simpson when Rooster Guy stood between them and the NBC camera.
Rooster Guy was quickly shooed off by security, and it turned out, he was drunk. No, really, he was. So he spent some time in the drunk tank.
But he will not face charges.
Officials said he was not trespassing because he had a ticket to be there. And he was not interfering with tournament play.
The tournament was over.
He simply made bird noises.
And interrupted Costas.
That's not so bad, is it?
For some reason, there was a trade in the NBA on Wednesday.
No big stars. Well, one used to be, but not anymore.
So this was not a huge deal.
But what the heck is the NBA doing, allowing for a trade to not only be made, but to be announced, during the NBA Finals?
Yes, we know the draft is next week. But this announcement could have been made after the NBA's biggest showcase had concluded.
Same thing with the hiring of a coach. Charlotte picked some no-name a few days ago.
Couldn't that no-name get his picture in the paper at a time that does not conflict with the NBA's biggest showcase?
Starting to think the NBA's PR machine is losing a step.
For now, it should all be LeBron, Dwyane, Kevin, Russell and the Finals. No other NBA news.
