BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles have released infielder Miguel Tejada from his minor league contract at his request.

Tejada signed with the Orioles last month and was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk, where he hit .259 with no homers and 18 RBIs in 36 games.

But the 38-year-old Tejada apparently didn’t see an opportunity to play anytime soon with Baltimore, so he asked for his release Monday.

Tejada, who won the 2002 AL MVP award with Oakland, played twice before with the Orioles, from 2004-07 and in 97 games in 2010.

Tejada has a lifetime batting average of .285 with 304 homers and 1,282 RBIs. His release comes two days after the Orioles released 49-year-old pitcher Jamie Moyer from a minor league contract at his request.
