Dock to be removed next month from Oregon beach

It's part of debris from last year's tsunami in Japan

SALEM, Ore. — The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department says the work to remove a dock from Agate Beach near Newport, Ore., could begin as soon as July 30.

The 66-foot dock will be dismantled and hauled away from the beach under an $84,000 contract with Ballard Diving and Salvage of Vancouver.

The dock washed ashore June 5 and officials confirmed it had been swept away from Japan in the March 2011 tsunami.

Pieces of the dock will be saved for a local memorial.
