Talking Points: No shot clock in Kentucky

The wonder of the shot clock apparently has not reached Kentucky yet.

Notre Dame Academy of Covington, Ky., won a girls basketball playoff game played at glacial speed. Notre Dame weathered a game-long slow-down by Highlands of Fort Thomas to beat the Bluebirds, 13-8.

That’s not a misprint. Neither is the halftime score of 4-0. Nor is the third-quarter score of 6-0.

“That was extremely weird,” said Notre Dame’s Olivia Voskuhl, who led all players with six points. “It felt like it wasn’t even a practice.”

Notre Dame beat the Bluebirds 59-31 during the regular season.

“Tonight was all strategy for us to make it a close game,” Highlands coach Jaime Richey said. “We lost big when we tried to run with them. We had to come up with the best possible way to win the game, so we slowed it down.”

The plan almost worked. It was a two-point game with 2:01 to play at 10-8. Highlands missed two shots in the final 90 seconds while Notre Dame made two of three free throws.

Notre Dame coach Nicole Levandusky said: “Our girls have no excuses not to be ready for practice. They should be pretty fresh.”
