JERUSALEM (AP) — Palestinian medical officials say a young Palestinian man has been badly wounded after being hit in the head by Israeli army fire in the West Bank.

Witnesses say 19-year-old Mohammed Taysir Abu Awad was among a group of youths throwing rocks at an Israeli checkpoint near Jerusalem. Hospital director Dr. Ahmed Betawi says Awad is in critical condition.

It was unclear whether Awad was hit by a live bullet or another projectile, such as a rubber bullet or tear gas canister.

The military says soldiers responded to the protesters Monday with “riot dispersal means,” not live fire, and that it is investigating the incident.

Several Palestinians and international activists have been struck by gas canisters fired at their heads in recent years.
