KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) — Benton County Republicans are apologizing for crowding at Saturday’s caucus in Kennewick that shut out hundreds of participants.

One precinct volunteer, Leanne Minter, told the Tri-City Herald (http://is.gd/0oW3ML ) precinct officers are trying to find out who couldn’t get in to apologize personally.

The county Republican Party says 800 to 1,000 people were turned away from the Three Rivers Convention Center. Chairman Patrick McBurney says about 1,700 people got in, and 1,677 straw votes were counted.

McBurney says there was no intent to bar supporters of particular candidates. He says people who were unable to vote were disenfranchised by the state’s decision to cancel the primary to save money.
