RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — If you wanted to register for one of the free tours of the Hanford nuclear reservation this year, you’re too late.
The seats filled up fast early Tuesday morning when registration opened on a website.
KONA reports people eager for a first-hand look at clean-up work can check the website for cancellations.
The bus tours are limited to about 2,500 seats for 60 tours from April through September.
The five-hour tour includes the B Reactor, the world’s first, full-scale nuclear reactor that produced the plutonium used in the “Fat Man” bomb dropped over Nagasaki, Japan, to end World War II. The tour also includes the $12 billion vitrification plant to turn Hanford waste into stable glass logs for storage.
