SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Senate has approved a measure implementing an online marketplace where individuals and small businesses can shop for health insurance coverage.

The vote on Monday sends the measure to Gov. John Kitzhaber, who has championed it. Proponents hope the marketplace, called a health insurance exchange, will help connect people with affordable health coverage and allow them to easily compare the options available to them.

School districts that can get coverage more affordably through the exchange will be able to opt in down the road. Kitzhaber also hopes the exchange will eventually be vehicle to open his overhaul of Oregon’s Medicaid system to more people.
