RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — Registration opens Tuesday for free public tours of the Hanford nuclear reservation.
Seats are limited and fill up fast when registration is opened on the website just after midnight Monday.
The Tri-City Herald reports (http://is.gd/YHFGCf ) all the seats were filled last year in eight hours.
About 2,500 seats are available this year for 60 tours offered over 30 work days from April through September.
The five-hour tour includes the B Reactor, the world’s first, full-scale nuclear reactor that produced the plutonium used in the “Fat Man” bomb dropped over Nagasaki, Japan, to end World War II. The tour also includes the $12 billion vitrification plant to turn Hanford waste into stable glass logs for storage.
