OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Washington state House has passed a bill allowing a handful of struggling public elementary schools to become teacher training laboratories modeled after medical residency programs.
The measure passed the House on a 67-31 vote. House Bill 2799 now heads to the Senate for consideration.
The bill, which was introduced at the request of the governor, would allow school districts to partner with colleges of education to select the schools, some of which would have to come from the state’s largest school districts.
Schools in over a dozen cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston use a similar model. Proponents say these schools give added attention to struggling students while providing new teachers valuable on-the-job training.
