Community notebook: Fort Vancouver Run draws 777 participants

A total of 777 runners participated in three races on Sunday during the Fort Vancouver Run. The fourth-annual race staged by Energy Events gave runners a choice of three distances, with each race starting and finishing at the Fred Meyer Grand Central shopping center.

The longest race covered 15 kilometers and was won by Scott Pinske from Hillsboro, Ore. The 22-year-old finished in 50 minutes and 22 seconds. A total of 238 finished that race, including women’s champion Maya Barba of Lake Oswego, Ore., with a time of 1:02:12.

The middle distance was 10 kilometers and was completed by 256 runners. The winner was 25-year-old James Withers of Santa Rosa, Calif., with a time of 34:45. The women’s winner was Julie Leasure of Portland in 40:12.

The 6-kilometer race drew 283 to the finish line. The first of those was Vancouver’s Eric Dolezal, 29. His time was 19:22. Katarina Mueller, 20, of Vancouver was the women’s champion with a time of 21:47.

In addition to the three featured races, a total of 128 kids participated in two different runs.

Bulls rugby wins 3 matches

Battle Ground’s high school rugby team won three of four matches at a tournament over the weekend.

The Bulls began by beating Canby 15-5, on the strength of tries scored by Tate Brown, Trevor Ingram and Bryan Herrick. Next, Battle Ground took down Linn-Benton, 35-0. Matt Beraldo scored two tries. Ingram, Mason Davies, Jack Fletcher, Joe Eiseman and Colton Prestwich each scored once. The Bulls beat North Clackamas 28-5 with Beraldo again scoring twice and Dylan Wells, and Jonah Simental each delivering one try. Four conversions were kicked by Fletcher.

In the final match, Bend defeated Battle Ground, 15-14. For the Bulls, Tony Dierking and Colton Prestwich scored tries, and Wyatt Webb kicked two conversions.

On March 10, the Bulls Division 2 team will take on Tualatin at 2 p.m. and the Division One side will play Linn-Benton at 3:30 p.m. Both matches are at Tukes Mountain Elementary School in Battle Ground. Bulls rugby is made up of players from Battle Ground, Prairie and Skyview high schools.

Swimmers win state races

A pair of Columbia River Swim Team swimmers recently won age-group state titles for the short-course season.

Tommy Beale won the 50-yard breaststroke for 9-year-old boys in 40.00 seconds at the Oregon 10-and-younger Championships held Feb. 18-19 in Springfield, Ore.

Darya Samiee won the 14-year-old girls 1,000-yard freestyle at the Oregon 11-14 Championships held Feb. 24-26 in Corvallis. Her time was 10:54.78.
