WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney still has a long way to go to clinch the Republican nomination for president. But at this rate his rivals won’t catch him unless they pull off an unlikely fight at the party’s national convention in August.
Romney has won 55 percent of all the delegates in play so far, putting him on pace to secure the nomination in June. At their current rate, none of Romney’s rivals will reach even half the number of delegates needed to win the nomination.
Romney’s six victories on Super Tuesday netted him over 200 delegates — more than twice as many as any other candidate.
He now has a total of 415, compared to 176 for his chief rival, Rick Santorum. It takes 1,144 to win the nomination.
