Hampton upsets Savannah State 59-46 in MEAC

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Christopher Tolson scored 16 points and Hampton upset top-seed Savannah State 59-46 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday night.

The Tigers (21-11), who had a 13-game winning streak snapped, had scored at least 50 points in the previous 18 games.

Hampton (12-20), the defending conference tournament champion, also got 12 points from Darrion Pellum and 10 by Wesley Dunning.

Leading 48-44 with 2:38 remaining, Hampton finished the game with an 11-2 run. The Pirates made 9 of 10 free throw attempts in the final 1:48 while Savannah State was 1 for 8 from the field during the run. Hampton made 16 of 20 free throw attempts for the game.

Hampton shot 41.7 percent (20 of 48) from the field while the Tigers made only 27.1 percent (16 of 59).

Preston Blackman led the Tigers with 12 points.
